News: The victims of the London Bridge terrorist attack were honored in the UK.

Politicians were accused of politicizing the deaths of Saskia Jones and Jack Merritt

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also attended the vigil along with opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn. The attack occurred during the run-up to the general election and pushed the issue of terror onto the election agenda.

And who were these victims?

Saskia Jones and Jack Merritt helped organize an event dedicated to the fifth anniversary of the University of Cambridge Prison rehabilitation program.

Both victims were university students, while Merritt also worked as a course coordinator at the University of Cambridge's Institute of Criminology, and Jones volunteered at the event.

In a statement released through police, Merritt's family paid tribute to "our beautiful, talented boy," who they said died "doing what he loved."

"Jack was an intelligent, thoughtful and empathetic person who looked forward to building a better future, he wanted to make a career helping people in the criminal justice system," they said.

Jones' family described her as a "funny, kind, positive person" who had recently applied to a police graduate recruitment program hoping to specialize in a victim support program.

"She was determined to live life to the fullest and had an amazing thirst for knowledge, which allowed her to be the best she could be," they added.

The vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge said he was "devastated" to learn that staff and alumni were among the victims."

"Our university condemns this heinous and senseless act of terror."

News: Total economic transformation" due to climate change

It's about growth

This transformation has happened before, Ashoka Modi said. The Princeton University economist pins his hopes on climate-neutral economic growth in part, and perhaps ironically, on the historical turning point that started climate change: the industrial revolution. Then, as now, the global economic system changed fundamentally; and then, as now, the transition led to winners who profited and losers who needed compensation.

Modi's comparison, however, comes with a caveat: without the looming existential threat, the industrial revolution of the 19th century evolved as technology and business practices evolved. Adoption was more organic.

The rapid rise in global temperature, as outlined in the 2018 IPCC report, means that "we cannot afford to wait," he said, adding that "government intervention needs to be much more aggressive."

While there is broad agreement that both a serious carbon tax and strict regulation are needed, Modi is mostly in favor of the latter. - The rules work. Restrictions lead to innovation," he said, citing as one example the Clean Water Act of 1972, which forced the American industry to find ways to limit water pollution and remain profitable.
