In a statement released through police, Merritt's family paid tribute to "our beautiful, talented boy," who they said died "doing what he loved."
"Jack was an intelligent, thoughtful and empathetic person who looked forward to building a better future, he wanted to make a career helping people in the criminal justice system," they said.
Jones' family described her as a "funny, kind, positive person" who had recently applied to a police graduate recruitment program hoping to specialize in a victim support program.
"She was determined to live life to the fullest and had an amazing thirst for knowledge, which allowed her to be the best she could be," they added.
The vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge said he was "devastated" to learn that staff and alumni were among the victims."
